History:

Ella Mae Power deeded land on the north side of Ten Mile Road, west of Wixom Road, to Novi Township. Before the land could be transferred to the Township, it was sold by the State for unpaid taxes on the property. In the 1970s, City officials pushed the State to honor that donation by providing the proceeds of that sale to the City. The State returned the proceeds of that money to the City for the purpose of purchasing parkland within the City.

The City used that money to acquire a portion of the 160 acres that the Novi School District had purchased from the Fuerst sisters to build the Novi High School. The land acquired by the City became the future site of the Civic Center, Police station and Ella Mae Power Park. In 2003, the City leased back a portion of the park to the Novi School District in order to allow the district to build active recreation fields in an area previously used for nature trails.
